As of March 1st, 2021, after four months of strict closures and confinement in Germany, the government gave green light to hairdresser to restart cutting, drying and styling hair throughout the country again. Ahead of all other professions and businesses, hair salons were offering a glimpse of social life to lonely and furry citizens. In fact, in some cultures, a new haircut is an exercise of control and sometimes even a rite of passage; when many things seem to be beyond our control, a trivial gesture of care such as styling one's hair can be a symbolic powerful help to overcome constraints and face other challenges with a positive outlook. Locke-down documents one aspect of the attempt to "return to normal life" for Berliners with before-and-after portraits taken on the spot in different neighbourhoods of the city, during the first month salons reopened.
